Why Hallmarking?
Precious metals are rarely used in their pure form; they are usually alloyed with other metals. Determining the precise composition of precious metals in an item by touch or sight is impossible. Therefore, legal requirements dictate that items characterized as containing precious metals must be hallmarked.
Under the UK Hallmarking Act (1973), it is illegal for anyone engaged in commerce or business to claim that an unmarked item is wholly or partially made of precious metal(s), or to provide unmarked items with such claims.
Dealers are obligated to display a statutory notification listing authorized hallmarks on their premises. Failure to exhibit or maintain this notification is a violation. The term “dealer” encompasses individuals involved in the manufacturing, supplying, trading, selling (including auction sales), or exchanging of precious metal items, as well as related activities.

What is a Hallmark?
A hallmark consists of a set of marks affixed to items made of platinum, gold, palladium, and silver. Essentially, it serves as a guarantee that the product meets all legal requirements for purity (fineness) and has undergone independent testing. A complete hallmark requires three mandatory punch marks: the Sponsor’s mark (indicating the manufacturer), the Metal mark, and the Fineness (purity) mark.
